Self reflection exercise

Most of our lives we interact and react to the world based on our belief system formed by past experiences. These beliefs strongly influence our thoughts
about ourselves, others and the world , our emotional responses and our actions. However most people are unaware of what beliefs they have and the
impact it is having. We predominately operate in autopilot mode.

On the one hand this is beneficial as we conserve energy if we operate unconsciously, just repeating patterns of behaviour from the past. However remaining
unaware gives us no choice to change – we don't know what we don't know. A more aware or conscious approach is needed to make a change.

Self Awareness gives us choice…if we know who we are and are consciously aware of why we do what we do, then we can also make conscious
choices to be different.

Remember: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got. ”
Instructions
Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted, turn off your phone, park your to do list, clear your mind of distraction just for now, take three
long slow breaths, get grounded and tune into your own sense of truth when answering the following questions:
Current state
Think of a recent situation or conversation (at home or work) where you would have liked it to go differently.
  • What did you notice?
  • What internal thoughts or beliefs about yourself or the other did you have?
  • What feelings came up for you at the time and how did you recongise the feelings (body sensations, emotions)?
  • How did you behave – what choice of words, body language, reactions were present?
Future state
On reflection, what would you like to have happened differently? What would have been the preferred outcome?
  • What beliefs do you need to let go of that are not serving you?
  • How could you have tuned into your emotions better and how could you have supported yourself to regulate and express your emotions in a more useful
    way?
  • How would you have acted differently (say and do)?
Now go back and re-read your answers and add anything further as you are deeper in the awareness process.
