Setting priorities with your team

Team and groups are often busy working away, but it is not always so clear what people’s individual priorities are and what exactly they are working on in the moment.


The questions that then arise are:

  • Is there any duplication?
  • Are they the right priorities for the team/business?
  • What are the team’s priorities as opposed to each individual’s priorities?

A good way to work through this is to:

  1. Have each individual team member identify their top 3 priorities, the big things they are working on and write them on post-it notes. This in itself can be a useful exercise for people who have many things on their plate!
  2. Each team member then shares their priorities and where they are at in terms of completing it 0 to 100%. It is amazing how often people do not understand what the other is working on and from this understanding they understand how they can better support one another and it also exposes any duplications.
  3. The team can then reflect on its purpose and decide what they have to work on together as a team and agree the team’s top 3 priorities.
